Design
is another venue to man’s creativeness. Whether it concerns shelter,
its comfort and refinement, a vessel to drink from, a sofa to sit on or
a garment to adorn… The goal is to marry good taste to practicality.
The main preoccupation is to preserve beauty.
In the field of architecture, Morocco’s contribution is invaluable.
Unfortunately, if it has withstood the test of time so far, today its
future is under the threat of continued neglect. In spite of some
private efforts and promises of international organizations for
immediate intervention, the danger of dilapidation remains real.
Morocco treasures some the finest Islamic architecture and because
of its climate, the country offers invaluable lessons both in
environmental design (i.e. integrating architecture with nature) and
old techniques and media of construction: carved stuccoes and stones,
wall finishes (read about an antique wall treatment tadelakt), adobe
architecture, tents… etc.
The world is rich with dazzling examples of interior design and
architecture inspired by Morocco. Right here in the USA, at the
beginning of the last century, California and Florida abounded with
exquisite interiors as well as outdoor space treatment inspired by the
so-called neo-Moorish style, found in residences, hotels and
restaurants.
Likewise, ideas in furniture design abounds, divans and sofas, ottomans, tables of various usage in a variety of materials.
In a humble effort of promoting Moroccan art, craft and design, we hope to help increase awareness of this region rich heritage.
